Arrangements using contrasting colours

Sandy Marker

The study of ikebana is just not about arranging flowers; it takes us into the realm of colour, which is one of the three elements of Sogetsu.

This lesson theme is working with contrasting colours – colours directly opposite each other on the colour wheel. One of the easiest combinations is Red and Green and we often use this without thinking at Christmas time. Another favourite is yellow with purple and sometimes seen blue and orange.

When working with this theme make one of the colours dominant with the other as a contrasting feature – in other words do not make the colours equal in volume. Another point to consider is place cool colours against warm colours, which makes the colours meld together
