Arrangements Using Leaves

Sandy Marker

What a wonderful bounty we have to select from because Sydney sits in the temperate zone, which means we can source both tropical and cold region leaves.
The selection in my garden ranges from Abyssinian banana leaves to Japanese maple, oak leaf hydrangeas to strelitzia etc. This doe not include the water plants in the bog garden or the many pots situated around the garden – so there is always something amazing to work with. My students also manage to source an amazing selection of leaves from their own gardens or while walking the dog, with such a bounty at hand results in a varied range of arrangements.

When teaching my students I stress they must remember the elements of Sogetsu plus not to forget the finer points such as movement, depth etc making each arrangement holistic.
