Floating Arrangements

The theme of ‘Floating Arrangements’ comes under the title of Variation #7 in the textbooks.

When arranging a ‘floating arrangement’ take special care and thought as to what you are trying to show, it is not just the water but also the materials floating. As in all Sogetsu arrangements you must know the properties of the material and in this case does the material float.

Don’t get confused with Floating Arrangements to Emphasising Water. When creating a Floating Arrangement the container is very important plus think carefully about the water level. If the water is taken to the meniscus level the ‘floating’ material is exposed to movement by the ambient air. One of my favourite aspects of Sogetsu is the shadows arrangements create and in this exercise note the beautiful shadows on the base of the container

My students enjoy this lesson theme especially in summer because it creates a cool feeling and a chance to use material in another way.
