Surfaces with Line

Textbook 3 lesson 15 is not one of my favourite lessons for a couple of reasons, mainly because the end result is quite often flat unless the surfaces go in several directions, which in most cases don’t.

In this arrangement I selected a container that was composed of several lines but in hindsight it proved just as difficult as using a container where a kenzan could be used, in fact that possibly would have been a better choice. A stickler for not having material lean on the container mouth I insert a single small cross bar and even then, the material looks as if it is leaning. Using yellow Dogwood and Bird’s Nest fern leaves. to create the ‘surface’ in green tonal colours.

The end result was approved by the tutor in the Iemoto’s class at Sogetsu, Tokyo but I feel the work lacks character and a focal point
