School holidays - introduction to ikebana

School holiday often means grandparents step in to keep an eye on the young and it can lead to special bonuses such as attending ikebana class for the first time.

Four budding young students accompanied their Grandmothers to class. As an introductory I chose to emphasis line because it can be understood by all ages. Well I didn’t have to worry about any of my ‘young students’ understanding the concept, actually they all rose to the challenge with very little explanation.

I noticed the young students soon became immersed in the challenge experimenting with different ideas. To my surprise they even knew when there was an imbalance in the design or when the spaces didn’t feel right.

As a professional schoolteacher I have seen the beautiful innocence of how children tackle challenges – with a care free spirit and no embarrassment. They treat everything as a new adventure, something I wish we could as an adult.
