Thursday 17th March. Iemoto’s Class

Today the class was conducted by Gaho Isono san, with two themes to work from which we could select or settle to do freestyle.

As I mentioned before I am following the themes set and today’s was Book 2 Lesson 6, Variation #4 Nageire (sometimes called Omission because the Soe element is not present). I ended up doing this lesson twice because as many of you may know the selection of containers is overwhelming and I choose one that is used for freestyle. I learnt when doing ‘pattern’ lessons (set lessons in Book 1 & 2) you must use the regulated size containers so one learns the correct methods. By using the container with the narrow mouth it is seen as an easy option to do this arrangement. Hence I repeated the lesson in the afternoon and succeeded in doing it correctly with a vertical fixture, which is seen as more difficult for Variation #4. A point one must not forget – make sure the water level in the container is quite high covering all technical workings and it is part of the holistic appearance of the work

The other choice of lesson was Book 4 Lesson 10 Arrangement using Fruit or Vegetables. Unfortunately I cannot really warm to this arrangement because I find it difficult to see beyond the material looking like vegetables. The demonstration was excellent and using a wonderful colour range. A point to remember unlike in Variation #7 Morimono arrangements where there is no need for water but this arrangement uses water because flowers or branches are added to the arrangement. I will endeavour to try to understand this arrangement style
