Tonal Colour Arrangements

Colour is one of the 3 elements (Line, Colour and Mass) in Sogetsu ikebana. During our studies we spend time learning about Tonal Colours and Contrast Colours, before moving on to arrangements emphasising the colour of the container.

Tonal colour is defined when the amount of white or black is added to the one hue (colour). There has been some discussion is white a colour and the consensus in ikebana is yes. Even though when we look closely at a white flower there is often a colour tinge which is the extreme end (or white end) of that colour in the tonal range. I could discuss this topic for a long time because colours are fascinating plus they are so important in your ikebana work.
